It was an honour, John

I have spent the morning preparing and when he arrives,

my heart in my mouth, the linen on the table,

it all looks like a picture, a magazine spread.

We uncork the wine, break the bread, everything still

to be said, jokes at first, anecdotes, gossip about writers

he knows and I have read, then the complaints

and consolations, between interruptions from the children,

and by the third bottle of wine, recriminations, accusations,

unforgivable remarks. Till it is dark, and unsteadily

he makes a move to depart. Instead, we walk

the alcohol off by the light of the moon, passing

the baby when our arms tire, quiet now, except to remark

on the extraordinary lucidity of the sky, the clouds,

so diffuse by daylight, by night so strangely defined.
